More Than A Love Song!
When you listen to "love songs" on the radio, you hear people poetically
(and sometimes pathetically) saying things like, "Awe girl, what
would I do without you" "You're my heart, you're my soul, my reason
for living!" And of course there's: "Oh Baby, you're my every-THANG!"
We even use food imagery as a sign of affection: Hey sugar! Honey
Buns, Sweetie, Pumpkin, etc. |

The point is that it is natural for human beings to express a great affection for others as well as a great dependence on them for our happy existence. On this Feast of Corpus Christi, we as Catholics celebrate Jesus as the object of our greatest affection and deepest dependence. We celebrate him, not simply as our favorite desert, appetizer, side-dish or candy treat ~ but as the Main Course! Bread is the universal symbol signifying the food that is necessary in every culture to sustain all human life. We dare say that this is precisely who Jesus is for us! He is the One Bread that not only sustains our faith lives but models what our lives are supposed to be: Eucharistic! Like Christ in the Eucharist, we must offer our bodies as a living sacrifice to God and others; our time to bring food to the hungry; our voices to advocate for the disenfranchised; our hearts to give thanks even in times of trial. We need to BELIEVE in Christ's presence even when we don't SEE his presence in the bread and wine or the homeless man and bitter, aging woman. Our celebration of the Eucharist (Mass) must never be limited to offering to God our love songs, but offering to God our total selves. But this won't happen until we make Jesus 'our all and our every-THANG!'
