Father Pat's Sermon Notes
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: July 3, 2005

Father Patrick Smith
Meet Father Pat

Bound to be Free!

As Americans celebrating our independence, we pledge allegiance to the flag. This seems ironic since allegiance is the act of binding oneself to another person, country, or ideal. The first commandment (Have no other gods before me) forbids believers from making the flag our ultimate allegiance. Nonetheless, there is an important lesson to be learned from our pledge.

Can a person be free and bound at the same time? An unbelieving world says, “No!” Why? Freedom is defined as the absence of rules, commandments, obligations, and commitments.

But in reality, this so-called "freedom" is the quickest path to bondage! A teenager wants to drink alcohol; another, to experiment with drugs. Another wants to drive 100mph; and another wants to take merchandise from a store without paying. Flash forward ten years: One man is hopelessly addicted to cocaine; another's alcoholism has caused the loss of his license; a woman is paralyzed from the waist down because of a high speed car accident; and a young man is facing three to five years of incarceration for auto theft. All pursued "freedom" from the rules and commandments ~ and all, to different degrees, found themselves less free in the end.

Sin always enslaves us. So, Jesus comes along talking to us about wearing a yoke! A yoke was a wooden harness placed on the shoulders and around the necks of two animals forcing them to work (pull) together. Yoke is usually the language of bondage, not freedom! But Jesus would change all of that forever. When you commit your life to Christ, you are literally bound to be forgiven; bound to be loved; bound to be delivered; bound to be healed; bound to be a witness; bound to be free! The key to true independence is pledging your DEPENDENCE on God! I pledge allegiance to the Lamb Who reigns with God the Father in Heaven and to his Truth upon which we stand, One God, three Persons, indivisible, with Liberty, Justice and Salvation for all!
