Father Pat's Sermon Notes
Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time: October 2, 2005

Father Patrick Smith
Meet Father Pat

Jesus IS the Plan of God!

It is not an uncommon temptation for church folk to use God's gifts and blessings for their own ends. In the Gospel, we see in the parable that the workers in the vineyard are less concerned about working for the owner of the vineyard who hired them, but instead, exploit the situation to serve their own selfish needs.

It precisely because this temptation is always with us that it is all the more inspiring to see what the Church looks like when Christians resist this tendency toward self-centeredness, but instead, give of themselves freely and even lavishly! As a parish you did this in the face of hurricane Katrina and Rita. Last Sunday you did it again in your unprecedented response to the Cardinal's Forward in Faith fundraising campaign.

I have challenged you, as the Gospel has challenged me, to imitate the radical generosity of Jesus who~ even in the face of neglect, disrespect, ridicule, mockery, brutality and even crucifixion ~ still was able to give of himself despite his hurts. We are within 15% of our goal and I have you to thank for this. I am sure the final amount will come very soon.

The point is this: If we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, we can accomplish anything. Anything! God is the founder, creator, writer, composer and executive producer of the Church! In other words, God is the owner of the vineyard. We exist to do God's bidding, attend to God's agenda, and work by his priorities. We are called to be a spiritual edifice; living stones built into a spiritual house with Christ as the corner stone. Focus on Jesus, and all will come together. Reject this Stone and everything will come tumbling down!
