Father Pat's Sermon Notes
Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time: October 16, 2005

Father Patrick Smith
Meet Father Pat

Giving to God what is God's!

To demonstrate the rightful owner of a coin, Jesus simply asks the question: "Whose image is on it?" Caesar's image is on the coin; so therefore, Jesus says, give to Caesar what belongs to him! This approach however raises an even more important question: To whom do you belong? To answer the question, Jesus invites us to take the same simple approach: Determine whose image is on it.

The Book of Genesis makes it clear that when God made human beings he made them male and female in his own image and likeness! If this is true about us as human beings, it is also true about us as Church. The Church is Christ's Body and not our own (1 Cor. 12:27). It is established by Christ and not by us (Matt. 16:18). The purpose of the Church is to lead others to Christ (Matt 28:19-20) ~ that is, to an encounter with the risen Lord that would be nothing short of life-changing! If this is the purpose and mission of the Church, it must also be the purpose and mission of the individuals and ministries that make up the church!

Choirs, Ushers, Lectors, Dancers, Eucharistic Ministers, Social Justice ministries, Sodalities & Holy Name ministries, Pastoral Councils, Finance Councils, Health ministries, Administrators, etc. must ALL see their purpose for existing as leading others to encounter Christ! Sin is what happens when we see ourselves as the definer of our own purpose and existence. If we don't let God define us as church, then we will define ourselves and the result will look nothing like the face of God! Instead, it will be the self glorified face of ourselves, - an image that has no power to save anyone.
