Father Pat's Sermon Notes
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time: October 23, 2005

Father Patrick Smith
Meet Father Pat

Lunatic, Liar or Lord!

For the second Sunday in a row. we see such a fundamental disconnect between the religious leaders and Jesus that it is virtually impossible for them to take him seriously. The same "disconnect" often exists today in us who find ourselves making excuses about why we can't, won't or don't practice the Gospel Jesus preached nor follow the example he set.

At some point, we have to ask ourselves exactly what it is we believe about Jesus himself ~ and what place he will have in our lives. In today’s Gospel, he proclaims the two great commandments: Love of God and love of neighbor. But if I don’t acknowledge Jesus’ authority in my life, then his commandments won’t mean anything.

Do you really believe in Jesus? Some people say that they don't accept that he is God, but just a wise and compassionate man. But here's the problem: Affirming Jesus as just a wise prophet is not an option that the Scriptures or even common sense allows! I have never met a person I considered wise say the things that Jesus said: "I am the vine and you are the branches" (John 15:5); "You must eat my flesh and drink my blood" (John 6:56); "Before Abraham was I AM" (John 8:58); " I am Truth"; (John 14:6) "No one gets to God except through me" (John 14:6).

If I spoke like this on Sunday, my parishioners would have me hospitalized before the recessional hymn was finished! Either Jesus was crazy, a compulsive liar, or exactly what he said he was: The Way, the Truth and the Life. "Jesus is Lord" was the profession of the first followers of Christ. So, what do you believe? What do his commandments mean to you?
