This having been said, however, the Gospel today makes it clear that there are some things in life that you must take care of yourself! This is especially true when it comes to our spiritual lives.

Can you imagine how strange it would be to hear a man say, "I got my wife membership at the local gym so that I could begin to lose a little weight!" or "I sent my daughter to medical school so that I could become a doctor!" Some things you have to do for yourself! This is what the wise virgins understood and the foolish ones did not. The wise ones said: You have to buy your own oil if you want to be ready to meet the bridegroom!

Are you ready to meet Jesus? Your spouse can't have a prayer life for you. Your mother can't go to confession for you. Your uncle can't feed the hungry and clothe the naked on your behalf. Nor can he make you wiser in the faith by attending bible study or CCD in your place. If you want to be closer to God, you have to personally invest the time, energy and faith to grow deeper in relationship with him. Because there are few things so foolish as sending someone else to the beach when it is you that needs to get a tan!
