On this first Sunday of Lent, we begin with the story of God entering into a covenant with Noah. Every covenant is sealed by the swearing of an oath. God swears never to destroy the earth again through a flood. But, why the oath? The oath is meant to bring greater assurance, to the one requesting it, that our word was our bond! The point is, when everything is at stake an oath is required.

Whether a witness in the courtroom, a doctor in the hospital, a judge on the bench, a firefighter, police officer, or member of the Armed Forces, all are required to swear an oath before exercising their office because the price of their promises not kept is measured in human lives ~ and not just dashed hopes. Someone once said that in a bacon and egg breakfast the chicken is involved but the pig is committed!

God stakes his life and reputation on every promise he makes to us. The crucifix is a perpetual reminder of what happens when covenant oaths are broken by sin: Death is the result ~ "Cross my heart, hope to die!" However, that same crucifix demonstrates the extent that God is willing to go to keep his word (his oath) to us! The cross says God is not just involved, he is committed.
