Father Pat's Sermon Notes
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: July 2, 2006

Father Patrick Smith
Meet Father Pat

There Is No Freedom Without Revolution!

When God saw the human race in a hopeless cycle of sin and death, he knew that nothing short of a revolution could break death's hold on our lives. The dictionary describes revolution as the seizing of power, a radical change in a situation. The Christian revolution began when Mary said "yes" to allow Jesus to enter into her womb and into our world.

God, himself, entered into our world becoming accessible to us as never before. Sometimes this involved lives being turned upside down before being turned right-side up! Like the hemorrhaging woman in the Gospel, we can at times go years battling a painful condition.

Our struggle can be a physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or moral one. At times these battles can go on so long that we eventually despair of any hope of ever being free. As Mary's "yes" began the Christian Revolution, the hemorrhaging woman's "yes" began her personal revolution: her liberation from fear, infirmity and hopelessness. In addition to hers, the faith-filled "yes" of Jairus would lead to liberation of his daughter from death!

As we celebrate the 4th of July this week, the ongoing revolution our nation needs will not come about through our faith in the power of our military or our annual income. For us who believe, Jesus is our revolution. He is our declaration of independence from sin, darkness, fear, injustice and despair. Until we realize this, our singing of "Glory Glory Halleluiah" will make very little difference because while "His Truth is marching on" our freedom will be put on hold until we are willing to march with it. When we do, the last verse of our song will be: "His Truth Has Made Us Free!"
