Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: July 9, 2006

Meet Father Pat			WHEN GOD IS AMAZED! One day a Roman soldier came up to Jesus and asked him to heal his servant (See Luke 7:1-10). Jesus agreed to visit the man's house but the soldier stopped him and said, "I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof. But if you say the word, my servant will be healed… When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him and said to the crowd, 'I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith'."

Jesus was clearly impressed! However, today's Gospel shows us that leaving Christ amazed is not always a good thing. After preaching in his home town, the reception he received was rather cold. And "Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith!" Each encounter that left Jesus amazed, had to do with faith: Its wonderful presence or its astonishing absence!

By the assent of our wills in faith, or the hardening of our hearts in fear, WE bring Christ joy or leave him disappointed. God wants to do "mighty deeds" in your life and through your life. But grace must be received for miracles to happen.

The people of Nazareth couldn't accept that "a local boy" could ever be more than a local boy ~ and the mighty deeds of God would have to be postponed to another visit in another town!

How about you? Can you see beyond bread when Jesus passes by in the Eucharist? Or the priest, when he comes to you in Confession? Or the human institution, when our leaders proclaim the faith? A commentary I read put it well: "How often have miracles passed me by, as I questioned the source of grace?" (From: A. Camille- God's Word is Alive!)
