Waking Up: We need to become aware and educated about the issues. Many efforts toward social justice and compassion came about as a result of personal crisis, tragedies or injustices. The good news is that we don't have to wait for a crisis to come our way to wake us up ~ we just have to care about those who are already there.

Speaking Up: Everyone doesn't have a voice in society or a seat at the table ~ but others do. Being a voice for the voiceless; that is, advocating on behalf of the most vulnerable in society is a way we cultivate peace. Honest and open dialogue, too, is a way we become liberated from our false assumptions that foster hate and violence.

Showing Up: You can study the damage report for only so long. At some point you have to show up in person and provide relief and assistance directly. Similarly, you can complain about society and help no one or you can show up at the polls and vote.

Stepping Up: Sometimes, the only way to get some leaders to change is to change the leaders. And sometimes, the right leader for the job is YOU! Jesus, however, offers this stipulation: It cannot be about you. If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all" (Mark 9:35)! Peace is God's gift, and only with faith and humility will our efforts to cultivate peace bear the desired fruit.
