29th Sunday in Ordinary Time : October 22, 2006

Meet Father Pat			A Drink with a Friend Eating and drinking is much more than a biological necessity. When a man asks a woman out for dinner, she shouldn't assume it is because she looks frighteningly thin or close to starvation! Whether it be a funeral repast, a wedding reception or a birthday party, food has to do with family, friendship, community, an invitation to deeper intimacy.

Asking someone out to eat doesn't connote, "I would like to feed you" but "I would like to know you; and I want you to know me".

St. Paul once said, "I wish to know Christ and the power flowing from his resurrection; and likewise to know how to share in his suffering…" (Philippians 3:10). You can be sure that someone cares deeply about you when they not only want to know you but to know your suffering ~ first hand!

A proverb states that when you share your bread you are inviting someone to partake in your blessings, and when you share your cup you are inviting someone to partake in your suffering. Jesus asks "Can you drink the cup I shall drink or be baptized in the same bath of pain as I?"

Do you really want to know me; to share in my life? How bad do you want to know Christ ~ as bad as he wanted to know you? He suffered for you. Do you want to know him enough to face your fears, His truth, your flaws, your potential? Enough to discover Him in the poor, the hungry, and the weak and defenseless in our society? If your answer is yes, then drink up ~ and discover what it really means to live as a true disciple of Jesus Christ!
