30th Sunday in Ordinary Time : October 29, 2006

Meet Father Pat			What do You Want Him to do For You? A few weeks ago at Mass, we read the Gospel story of a rich man who came runnig up to Jesus to request a favor: "May I have some of that Eternal Life, please?" He was fully prepared to receive his request and be on his way! He was stunned when Jesus told him to sell his possessions and move in with him and his band of disciples! That is, "Follow Me."

In cntrast to the rich man, today's Gospel offers a striking contrast. Upon hearing that Jesus was in town, a blind man began yelling out for him. Unlike the rich man, he didn't get the red carpet tratment from Jesus' disciples ~ they tell him to be silet! He shouts even louder ~ and Jesus stops. Healing theis man was not a part of Jesus' itinerary, but his man's cries got him to change his palns. Prayer is powerful!

The man jumped up, threw off his cloak (his "security blanket") and ran to him! All that matered was that Jesusu was waiting for him! "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked. "Master, I want to see!" the man replied. Jesus restore dhis sight right on the spot! Without being asked and without hesitation the man followed Jesus "on the way."

Apparently, sight wasn't all he was seeking after all ~ it was a relationship with Jesus. "Master, I want to see" really meant "Master, I want to see ~ YOU, so that I can follow you!" Too often we just want the blessing, the healing, the house, the car, the answer to our dilemma and be on our way ~ but not the relationship.

Sometimes being blind has nothing to do with our eyes.
