In other words, what you and I anticipate at any given moment can either make our day or ruin it! On this first Sunday of Advent, we are invited to reflect on the theme, Anticipation.

The Gospel today speaks of people "dying of fright" in anticipation of what is to come! Yet, it also highlights those who will be filled with hope in anticipation of the same event! How is this possible? Why is there such a contrast? Most importantly, which group represents YOU? The difference between the hopeful and the fearful is not in what is coming, but in who is waiting. Whether awaiting Christ's return at the end of time or during the course of this Mass, we need to get ready before receiving him.

"Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life." So, where do you stand as we begin this Advent season? Are you sober or intoxicated with self, shopping, and preparing for X-Mas (or Christmas without Christ)? The New Testament ends with the fervent prayer, "Come Lord Jesus!" Faithful disciples of Christ "can't wait" until Jesus returns and sets this world straight! As far as his disciples are concerned, Christ can't come soon enough! Advent is a time to prepare our hearts to be a welcome mat for the Savior rather than a drawbridge tightly secured in the closed and upright position.
