It certainly is noticeable that Christmas parties are breaking out all over the place: offices, community groups, nursing homes, parish ministries, etc. But in today’s Gospel, John the Baptist reminds us that before we jump into our Christmas party mode, we should be asking God what else it is that he is requiring of us personally before celebrating the day of his birth.

In the Gospel, everyone asks John, “What should we DO?” John responds with very specific answers! If you really want to get this pre-Christmas party started, then “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.”

To tax collectors he says, "Stop collecting more than what is prescribed." To the soldiers he says, "Do not practice extortion." God sent John the Baptist to help us keep the holiday a HOLY day!

The holiday calls for a party, the HOLY day calls for a change. Share your bread with the hungry and your toys with the needy! Reach out in forgiveness to your siblings. Send a Christmas card to someone who is not expecting it and will probably NOT return the gesture. But that's OK! Because, the Lord is near ~ and you can Rejoice! that the Lord is pleased with YOUR response to his presence!
