Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: January 21, 2007

Meet Father Pat			The Holy Spirit and the Christian Life It comes as no surprise to me that some people look at the demands of the Christian life as virtually impossible! “Love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44). “Forgive seventy-seven times” (Matthew 18:22). “Pray for your persecutors” (Matthew 5:44). “Don’t look lustfully at women” (Matthew 5:28). “Pray unceasingly” (I Thessalonians 5:17). “Do good to those who hate you” (Luke 6:27)!

Is this realistic? Is it even natural? No, Christianity is not natural ~ it’s supernatural! It is a life that can only be lived in the power of the Holy Spirit who is God!

The question that remains is: Is this the life you want to have? No one can live the Christian life better than Jesus himself, and it is through the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus lives HIS life in and through US! Only then are we ~ the community of faith ~ truly living as Christ’s Body and not just our own.

We are called to be a people animated by the Holy Spirit, strengthened by his word, fed by his body and blood, dependent on his grace, addicted to his love, and compelled by his will. We must be passionate about serving him, ecstatic about knowing him, willing to defend him and convicted to become like him.

We surrender our gifts and talents to serve his Kingdom so that we might speak as he spoke, lead as he led, hear as he heard and feed as he fed. With us as a people with many gifts and anointed by the one Spirit, the poor will have reason to hope because the work of Jesus will continue to be carried forth in the lives of his people on fire with his Spirit!
