If the quarterback was good, then there was nothing more exhilarating than running under that perfectly thrown ball in the end zone! On the other hand, when the quarterback wasn’t so good, the command: “Go deep” usually meant expending a lot of energy for nothing! Whether too long or too short, the quarterback’s throw never seemed to get to its mark.

After he had finished speaking, Jesus gave such a command to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Since he had been fishing all night, Simon had serious doubts about the wisdom of this command. But to his credit, Simon does what Jesus said ~ and his life would be altered forever. By going deeper as he was instructed, Simon saw Jesus in a completely new light; and what he saw convinced him to fall on his knees in repentance, leave his livelihood, and follow him for the rest of his life.

It's easy to play it safe in the game of life ~ even the spiritual life. But if you dare to take responsibility for your spiritual growth and allow the Gospel to challenge you at the core and lead you beyond your comfort zone, you will find yourself playing for a Quarterback who never misses his mark and a member of the team that is guaranteed to win!
