So, what is it that we celebrate on this Feast of the Ascension, an end or a beginning? On the one hand, the Gospel clearly states that Jesus “parted from them.” On the other hand, we are told that the disciples “returned to Jerusalem with great joy!” This clearly indicates that they did not see Jesus’ Ascension as his parting from them in the ordinary sense.

In fact, it doesn’t seem that they saw themselves as losing him at all! Their reaction was more like that of employees who hear it announced that their favorite co-worker and best of friends has bought the company and is now its acting CEO! They know that their co-worker will no longer be working at their side in the same way, but all rejoice because their friend will now be over them, serving as their leader!

What God wants us to know on this Feast Day is that we have it BETTER than the apostles did who walked with Jesus before his death and resurrection! He is not just our co-worker subject to the same frustrating work conditions or low pay, but he is in a position to do something to change our plight.

He is in a position of authority! Not only has our Savior not left us, he is more intimately involved in every aspect of daily operations than ever! He is our friend and he is in charge. That’s why today is going to be a good day!
