No, in the end we are judged by what we do or fail to do.

Therefore, each second Sunday of Advent introduces the person of John the Baptist sounding the wake up call to repentance. Repentance is a call to change--specifically, a change of heart. However, this change of heart must be manifested in outward acts if this heart-change is to be considered as having actually occurred! John puts it this way: “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance!”

For John, believing is not just something you do with your head and your heart, but with your hands and feet as well! It is by our deeds that we will be judged, not by our claim to faith alone.

Advent is a good time to ask ourselves a simple question: If practicing the Christian faith were declared illegal tomorrow and I had to stand trial after being accused of being an authentic disciple of Jesus, would there be enough evidence to convict me? Would the jury declare a mistrial?

If the answer is unsure or doubtful, then repentance is in order. Now is the time to begin building a case that would leave a godless jury confident and unanimous about where you stand and to Whom your allegiance belongs!
