It has been said that there is no greater blindness than to refuse to open your eyes. Jesus says it even better: “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying ‘We see’ so your sin remains.” Sin requires willful action, a conscious choice.

Repentance requires both an honest look at self and of God. Sometimes the TRUTH is right before our eyes but we choose not to acknowledge it. But this is not for no reason: If we see differently, we will be compelled to act differently. This is why St. Paul says, “Take no parts in fruitless works of darkness…learn what is pleasing to the Lord…and live as children of the light.”

If you are driving in heavy fog and suddenly the fog lifts, you may find yourself making an abrupt turn or slamming on your breaks ~ all because of what you now see in front of you! As we let the Word of God enlighten us this Lent, as we allow God’s truth to “lift the fog” of denial, pride, greed, anger, rationalization, fear, indifference and self-centeredness, don’t be surprised that an abrupt change in direction may suddenly be required!

Just as fog can hide the truth that you are on a collision course with the guard rail, so our sinfulness and unrepentant hearts can blind us to the truth that we are on a collision course with our destiny. So, open your eyes.
