Father Pat's Sermon Notes
5th Sunday of Lent: March 9, 2008

Father Patrick Smith
Meet Father Pat

Will You Believe?

Barack Obama, one of those seeking the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, wrote a book not too long ago entitled, The Audacity of Hope. A slightly adapted version of this title came to mind when I read the readings for this Sunday: The Audacity of God! Audacity means confident disregard, bold, fearless, unconventional, daring, without restraint.

For example, in a vision the prophet Ezekiel has, God leads him into a valley filled with dry human bones. God then asks the prophet an audacious question: “Son of Man, can these bones live?” The prophet is stunned by the question and is left temporarily tongue-tied. Finally he wisely says, “Lord, only you know the answer to that! As the story progresses we discover that God in fact can raise up an army from dead bones in a field: “O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them” (Ezekiel 37:12). Ah, the audacity of God!

Like the prophet of Ezekiel, God poses to us audacious questions to get us to respond with the bold, fearless and audacious response of faith! "I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25) Jesus boldly says. He then asks Martha, “Do you believe this?” Martha accepts the invitation to audacious faith: “YES LORD, I have come to believe that you are the Messiah!” (v. 27). Will you accept the invitation to ponder anew what the Almighty can do? Will you believe?

God said, “I will open your graves…” and Jesus confirmed it: “Lazarus, come out!” Like Martha and Mary, we say to Jesus “Master, the one you love is sick”: My mother, father, sister, brother, parents, nephew, granddaughter, best friend, etc. Do you believe that God can do what you cannot? Do you believe that God can deliver better than UPS? God may not answer all of your prayers but if you “take away the stone” of unbelief, you will walk away utterly amazed!
