In 1977, Leon Roberts (1950-1999) was named Music Director for Saint Augustine Parish and began teaching in the Saint Augustine School. With Richard Metcalfe and Bob Moore as organists, he continued the heritage of classical sacred music for which the Saint Augustine Chorale was famous. Leon Roberts' arguably greatest contribution was to expand the realm of sacred music as well as the musical repertoire of Saint Augustine to include an additional emphasis on traditional African American spirituals and hymns and the contemporary works which have become the hallmark of Saint Augustine's Gospel Choir.
Founded by Leon Roberts with thirteen original members, the Gospel Choir's first recording, The Mass of Saint Augustine, was recorded at Omega Studios.
Current Director: Samuel E. Cromwell
Mr. Roberts directed the Chorale and the new Gospel Choir until his departure from Saint Augustine in 1994.
12:30 PM Sunday Mass: Traditional African American spirituals and hymns as well as contemporary gospel music.
